Why Do we need Supplements?

Despite the strong scientific evidence that has emerged in the recent years, many people are generally still a little unsure about the facts when it comes to making nutritional supplementation a part of their daily diet.

The most frequently asked question is : "do I really need to supplement my diet ?" when I am already eating a "well balanced diet" containing proper amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fruits and vegetables  Well, to put the issue beyond doubt...

1 The Body Needs A Higher Dosage of Certain Nutrients
Some nutrients for example vitamin E, provides significant health benefits at dosages higher than what can be obtained through diet alone.  Studies have shown a daily intake of 400IU or higher of vitamin E, reduces the rate of heart attacks by 75%.  Regular supplementation of  other antioxidants such as vitamin C and the trace mineral selenium, can help prevent or delay the onset of some serious diseases like premature aging, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.

2 Fruits And Vegetables May Be Grown on Depleted Soil
Fruits and vegetables may be grown on depleted soil contain fewer vitamins and minerals than those harvested from fertile and nutrient rich soils.  Pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fumigants and other pollutants also affect the quality of fruits and vegetables.

3 Nutrients Lost Through The Cooking Process
Nutrients in food are lost during transportation, storage and  preparation. Certain vitamins such as vitamin C and enzymes are easily destroyed by heat during cooking.  Fruits for example apple, start to lose their vitamin C content the moment they are picked. And very often, imported fruits only reach us months after they have been picked

4 Interference of Nutrient Absorption
Drinking, smoking, drugs, laxatives and antibiotics interfere with nutrients absorption.  Diets laden with caffeine, fat, cholesterol, sugar and sodium deplete the body's reserves of nutrients.

5 Malaysians Eat Food For Taste
Malaysians generally eat food for taste and not nutrition. We eat nasi lemak for breakfast and roti canai for tea.  Often we eat because we are bored or to satisfy our craving for certain foods. Rarely do we eat because we need a specific nutrient. The trend is leaning towards food low in nutritive value. Our soft drink consumption has rocketed. Fast fried foods like chicken, beef and potatoes are now dominating our dinner plates. Chips are low in vitamins and minerals while fried foods are high in fats.

6 Eat Out is Now Fashionable
Eating fast food such as hot dogs, steaks and hamburgers is becoming fashionable, particularly to the urban populace. And with more and more women joining the Malaysian workforce, its becoming difficult to get three decent home cooked meals.

7 Lifestyle
The utilization of nutrients in our body increases under situations such as work pressure, stress and late nights. As the results, the body is unable to support the lifestyle and therefore burned out and feeling lethargic.

The raw material challenge
Which raw material give the best nutrients? Shaklee did the research before they decide which raw materials to use.  For example, they do not use carrots for Beta Carotene because they found out that Dunaliella Algae contains far more Beta Carotene than 170 pounds of carrots or 368 pounds of spinach. That goes to show the extensive research made by Shaklee to ensure the best quality. (This statement can be read from Dr. Bruce B Miller's "The Shaklee Difference")
The raw material sourcing challenge
How to source the raw materials in large quantity? How to extract the nutrient without disturbing the nature's balance? Shaklee took up the challenge.  Through R&D, taking Beta Carotene as an example,  they grow the algae in tanks under the desert sun.  When harvesting, they pump air to bubble up the algae to the top of the water. This further ensures that the raw material is kept in as good condition as possilble, so the vitamin content is not spoilt. (This statement can be read from Dr. Bruce B Miller's "The Shaklee Difference")

The method of processing
You have the raw materials, but then how to process the nutrients and finish it as a tablet or capsule without destroying or disturbing the nature's balance? Shaklee's pure, rich natural Beta Carotene is obtained by centrifugal force (a method which Shaklee developed) to remove the Beta Carotene without damaging it. Another fine example is the Shaklee Garlic. It is not boiled, crushed, cut, chopped or any other methods which could easily causing imbalance in the natural composition of the nutrients. It is wind dried at certain temperature thus keeping its contents undamaged. The result is garlic made into tablet form that has the exact same effects of garlic consumed as a whole. (Dr. Bruce B Miller's "GARLIC")

The clinical testing
You have the finished product.  How do you know the product is absorbed by your body and work effectively as you expect it to? Shaklee performed clinical testing using two groups of human being, one on the Shaklee Product and the other on diet equivalent to the Shaklee product. For example, Carrot as the main diet of one group and the other on normal food plus the Shaklee Beta Carotene.  the result is compared. (Dr. Bruce B Miller's "The Shaklee Difference")
